Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise encouraged her passion for the arts and her creative side. Aunt Denise worked in the evening shifts as a nursing assistant to ensure she could follow her passion for art literature and theater in the daytime. DuVernay loved the film West Side Story, which she showed her. DuVernay discovered by watching her mother's examples of how art could serve as an activist vehicle. DuVernay had a mother who was aware of her social circle and taught her how to make use of the arts as a way to express herself. DuVernay was a summer resident of Lowndes County Alabama, where the father of DuVernay was born and was raised. Her father recalled watching the civil rights march of the past on the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay used the summers she spent in Alabama as inspiration for her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay completed Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in California in the year 1990. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she earned diplomas in English and African American Studies. DuVernay was in college at the time she began to become fascinated by the production aspect of television journalism. Her career began working as an assistant at CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being instructed to examine the garbage of a jury member's home. She was disappointed by her journalism tasks and decided to move into the world of public relations. DuVernay was hired right from college to be an intern at an unassuming studio. She started The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999. Apart from PR, the agency also launched several lifestyle and promotional networks including Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
